Last weekend I was sitting in my living room watching the television when a blackbird walked in through the open door. It simply tottered along, had a look around, gave me a curious glance and then walked out again. My smile lasted the rest of the day.

I was on an island in Scotland a few years ago, spending a day reading, writing and cooking a pork roast with lots of rosemary and garlic (beautiful day, doors all open), when a great yellow Labrador retriever followed his nose in, ran all around, stopped to sit a spell, then ran out again. I'm still smiling on that one.
